Nervio fantasma

El síndrome del miembro fantasma es la presencia de sensación en una extremidad que ya no está. Algunas personas que sufrieron amputaciones pueden llegar a sentirlo. Se cree que la forma del cuerpo está definida por el espíritu, que lo contiene como un vaso al agua, y que esta capacidad de contención puede ser moldeada, ampliando el lindero de sentir.

Al inicio las herramientas o prótesis requieren cierta conciencia para su uso, o una curva de aprendizaje que unificará la idea de un yo con un objeto o ánima. Tener la misma anchura del auto que conducimos, ser igual de afiladas que el cuchillo blandido, o las palabras lleva luego al llamado kung-fú de las cosas, un estado en que el azadón ya no pesa entre las manos y la fuerza de nuestra camioneta 4x4 ya es la propia, a veces con resultados funestos.

Recientemente se han realizado múltiples experimentos para demostrar algo ya sabido por las culturas antiguas. Se colocan visores a dos personas que les muestran la perspectiva visual de la otra, y luego de estímulos similares al mismo tiempo, serán capaces de sentir nítidamente lo visto solamente por la otra. De intercambiar pieles con un ave de noche, de sentir los dolores de una lejana hermana.

Si bien, percibir la realidad no crea la sensación, sí puede alterarla, similar al actuar de la luz en niveles subatómicos, que se comporta de forma distinta y altera su estructura dependiendo de si es observada. O del vacío sideral, que atraviesa todo lo conocido con su negrura.

Del lado gaseoso están las experiencias extra-corporales en las que alguien puede salir de sí y verse mientras duerme. Probablemente estos sueños cimentaron la idea occidental de un cuerpo separado de sí, dislocado entre espíritu y cuerpo, y esta imagen persigue a muchos que escarbamos con desesperación perdiendo las uñas, buscando lo valioso como si fuera el cuerpo fuera una nave desechable carente de potencia ante esta sustancia que compone a la vida y la muerte. Aunque seguramente nuestra conciencia sea el sueño colectivo de las células y bacterias que nos componen.

Cómo es posible que un insecto tenga el cuerpo de una hoja. ¿Qué las alas de una polilla sean ojos amarillos? ¿Qué el amor no sea suficiente?

Esta exposición toma un poco de esta flama incertidumbre, de esa ambición por querer entrar en comunión con un amor supremo, y ofrece burdas fotografías del hueco, de algunos elementos nacidos en medio de esta dislocación.

Phantom limb syndrome is a sensation in a limb that is no longer attached to a body. Some people who have suffered amputations can feel it. It is believed that the shape of one’s body is defined by the spirit, that contains it like a glass of water, and that this capacity for contain- ment can be shaped, expanding the limits of feeling and sensation.

At the beginning, tools or prostheses require some awareness for their use, there’s a learning curve unifying the idea of a self with an object or anima. Having the same width as the car we drive, being as sharp as the brandished knife or words we use leads us to the so-called kung- fu of things, a state in which the tool no longer weighs in our hands and the strength of our truck 4x4 is already ours, sometimes with disastrous results.

Multiple experiments have recently been carried out to demonstrate something that was well understood by ancient cultures. Visors are placed on two people, showing each the visual perspective of the other, and after similar stimuli at the same time, they are able to clearly feel what is seen only by the other. To exchange skins with a night bird, to feel the pain of a dis- tant sister.

Although perceiving reality does not create sensation, it can alter it, similar to the action of light at subatomic levels, behaving differently and altering its structure depending on whether a phenomenon is observed or not. The sidereal void, crossing everything that’s known with its blackness.

On the gaseous side, there are out-of-body experiences in which someone can come out
of their self s and see themselves while sleeping. Probably these dreams cemented the Western idea of a body separated from itself, dislocated between spirit and body. This image haunts many of us who dig desperately, losing our nails, looking for what is valuable as if the body were a disposable ship lacking in power confronted with this substance that makes up life and death. Surely our consciousness is the collective dream of the cells and bacteria that make us up.

How is it possible that an insect has the body of a leaf? That the wings of a moth are yellow eyes? That love is not enough?

This exhibition takes a bit of this flame of uncertainty, the ambition to want to enter in com- munion with a supreme love, offering crude photographs of the hole left in place and of some elements born in the midst of this dislocation.
